The Day I Remembered the Future

September 4, 2025 | John Elliott

Earlier this year, I picked up a novel called I Cheerfully Refuse. Based on a few things I had read in advance, I expected a bleak, dystopian story—and it was. What I didn’t expect was how its darkness would mirror some of my own this summer.

The book tells the story of Rainy, a gentle musician living in a cruel, post-collapse America. He suffers loss after loss until you’re left wondering, is this even a life worth living? Then—right when the darkness feels final—something unexpected happens. A flicker of hope breaks through. Reflecting back, Rainy says:

“That was the day I remembered the future.”

That line stopped me cold, because I know that feeling—and perhaps you do, as well. It’s when you’ve come to the end of yourself, and the future feels like it’s disappeared.

Despair creeps in.

And then, unexpectedly, something reminds you: you’re not alone and you’re not without hope.

This summer taught me that people walking through darkness don’t always look like people walking through darkness. If that’s you right now, here are three truths that have been a ballast for my soul:

  1. You’ve got people who care about you.

  2. You’ve got a God who hasn’t forgotten you.

  3. You’ve got a future awaiting you.

Struggling to believe these truths? Invite someone into the darkness with you—I’ve found it’s the quickest and surest way for light to seep in.

Don’t know who to invite in? Start with me. I’m not kidding. Darkness is a cruel companion, and no one should have to endure it alone.

Wondering how concerned you should be for me? Don’t be. Light broke through in some unexpected but powerful ways, and I’m hopeful for what lies ahead.

Carry on fellow travelers, we’ll talk soon.
